Pope GregoryⅠwas a prominent Pope in the early Middle Ages,who was one of Doctorsof Latin church.His life falled in two improtment stages,Before becoming the bishop ofRome,he was keen on the life of contemplation,explaining scriptures,teaching people.Thoughhe didn’t put forward the constructive theology, he inherited and developed the thoughts ofthe fathers of previous generations,and make them suitable for his time.He focused on how tomediate the contemplative and active life.He valued the sermon and doing missionary work.The second phase of his life was to be the bishop of Rome after590.During his regin,Gregoryreformed the church of Rome, enlarged the Pope’s power, promoted the development of themonasticism,sent missionaries to the British,contacted with the barbarian kingdoms frequently.He did not only put his religious thought into practice,enhanced the pastoral care,deepenedthe influence of church in the pepole’s daily life, expanded the Roman Christian territories,butalso played a very important part in the establishment of the dualistic system in west Europeand the formation of the medieval Christian civilization.In this paper, the author will conduct a comprehensive study of the thought of Gregoryand his practices.The paper mainly includes three parts. The first part mainly introduces thehistorical background which GregoryⅠlived in; The content of the second part analysesGregory’s contribution on the development of Christian thought and culture;The third partfocuses on his practices during his reign. It started with the time of GregoryⅠ,mainly thesocial and cutrural conditions of Rome Byzantine and Barbarian kingdom,meanwhile thesituation of christianty also described;Then represented the experience of GregoryⅠ.Thispaper introduces the thought of Gregory and his activity, analyses his influence on the socialculture and politics in the Middle Ages.
