The Roman Empire was the first superpower in the world. Then Napoleonic France,Hitler and Soviet Union appeared; now the United States became a dominant power in theworld. These superpowers took the term “hegemony” into the international politics. The term“hegemony” refers to a leading group or entity that controls others in a society or in the world. As a prominent post-modern, post-colonial American novelist, Don DeLillo deeply satirizesand criticizes the US hegemony and its influence on the colonized countries in his work,TheNames. The Namesis one of his great novels. It is a story about names and language. Thebackground of the story expands to the world arena. It describes the US hegemonic powerover Greece and other colonized countries. The American overseas inhabitants own their“superiority” over the colonized governments and the local people. Their evil acts are sure toirritate the nationalists’ revenge. From the political point of view on this novel, the thesisstudies the US economic, political and cultural hegemony over Greece and other colonizedcountries, and discloses that the real essence of the US hegemony is its interests. Finally, a conclusion is reached that people hate any form of hegemony andimperialism. With the rise of China and some underdeveloped countries, the future fate andtrend of the American would be complicated and elusive.
