After the middle Ming Dynasty, the development of Chinese painting began to enter into an important transition period, which was marked by freehand brushwork in wash painting. The representative painter is Xu Wei. Based on the previous development, Xu Wei has made great progress not only in the creation of painting but also in theory, which contributed to the maturity and perfection of freehand style of flower and bird paintings, and also helped him gain an important position in the history of Chinese painting development. In his art creation, he got rid of the bound of traditional norms and sway the ink with a heart which belonged to the emotions.Neither the natural feeling of the true temperament nor the true nature have not reflected his uninhibited personality. Xu Wei’s "arrogant" personality departed from the current social customs and norms, but it was bred by the specific environment. By analyzing the reflection of Xu Wei’ arrogant character in his flower-bird painting and his life experiences, time background, the achievements of his poem calligraphy and painting music,this article will summarize the reason of the formation of Xu Wei’ freehand style, and then analyze his painting and its influence afterwards, so as to understand the unique artistic charm of Xu Wei’s painting on flowers and birds.
