With the rapid and all-round social and economic development in China, both theoretical research and educational practice in higher vocational education has developed quickly. However, due to various reasons, our higher vocational college English reading teaching hasn’t established its own distinctive characteristics. It is ubiquitous to emphasize the learning of the knowledge of vocabulary and grammar over cultivating practical abilities in reading teaching. It doesn’t meet the needs of English skills and qualities of higher vocational talents in the job market, which makes it difficult to achieve the English reading teaching goals in higher vocational colleges.At present, the task-based language teaching method is quite popular in English teaching at home and abroad. However, the teaching method is applied more in English teaching in universities, primary schools and high schools but less in higher vocational colleges and even less research on college English reading teaching. Given this situation, the thesis interprets the relevant theories of task-based language teaching and reading, analyzing the current situation of college English reading teaching in higher vocational colleges and the feasibility of application of TBLT to college English reading teaching. In addition, it carries out empirical study on TBLT in college English reading teaching and explores the specific implementation steps of TBLT in college English reading teaching of higher vocational colleges. Then the experimental results are analyzed scientifically and systematically to prove whether the experimental study has operability and practical value. Moreover, the thesis tries to find out the shortages of the application of this teaching approach in higher vocational colleges, which helps to perfect the teaching model in follow-up research.The main research methods in this thesis involve literature review, questionnaire method and experimentation. Firstly the author searches related literature materials to know about the recent research on the theory and practice of the model of task-based language teaching at home and abroad. Then the author chooses experimental subjects and conducts the task-based reading teaching experiment in the experimental class. Finally the author assesses the results of the teaching experiment scientifically through questionnaire surveys and comparing test results, etc.The experimental research mainly takes the marketing majors of Class One and Two in the grade2011from Hunan Vocational College of Commerce, for instance. After the experiment, the author analyzes the results of the questionnaires and academic performance of the pre-test and post-test and draw a conclusion that the reading proficiency of the experimental class has improved greatly and the experimental class is obviously superior to the comparative class in learning motivation, learning interest, learning self-confidence, the study direction and learning attitude.This study indicates that it is more advantageous to improve students’reading abilities than the traditional teaching mode by applying the task-based language teaching to college English reading teaching in higher vocational colleges and combing tasks with the students’ major closely and that it is more conducive to stimulate students’ learning motivation; to enhance students’ interest in English learning; to change students’learning direction and learning attitude; to stimulate students’ lasting power to study English and to cultivate students’ application ability of English for special purposes. The study also shows that the teaching approach is a practical and feasible way to enhance students’ employment competition ability, employability and strengthen their innovative ability. In addition, The thesis puts forward several valuable strategies and suggestions for college English reading teaching in higher vocational colleges in the hope of providing beneficial guidance for improving the quality of college English reading teaching in higher vocational colleges.
