The1950s is an important period of time for cultural exchange between the east and the west. Zen was first introduced to the United States by the Japanese scholar Teitaro Suzkui and it influenced the whole American society culture and later it led to the creation of many ideas of modern art in the United States. As Zen culture became hot with the20th century modern art, abstract paintings, as a typical representative of American modern art, arises at this historic moment. This new form of art gradually becomes a good way for artists to express their feelings and ideas.The research of this topic, is meant to help us reevaluate the impact of Zen, as a typical eastern culture element, on modern art in the United States, and to investigate why abstract paintings appear in the United States under the circumstances of social culture development, and realize the influence of Zen on abstract paintings in the United States, grasp some essentials during the course of creation. Through the research of relationship between Zen and American abstract paintings, we are trying to open a window for artistic practice, and to explore the infinite possibilities of Zen and art practice in permeability through the window.
