Abstract/Summary:
In the late medieval times, the European mainland became rich with the recover ofeconomic and commerce trade, the Flanders area formed the textile industry net,represented by the city of Ghent. The rapid development of Ghent made the Flanders andcloth trade more and more important. Ghent became the most important textile centre innorth of Europe. Ghent developed earlier than other cities in Flanders, it had developedtextile industry and active trade. Meanwhile, Ghent was representative and typical in theback ground of renaissance of the cities in west Europe. However, the area of Flandersdeclined in the late14thcentury because it lacked nature resource, and relied on theimport extremely and shocked by the battle between the politic organizations.This article has four parts: the first part expounds the background of the rise of thecities in Flanders; the second part expounds the development of Ghent, including itslocation and population and textile industry; the third part discusses the fall of Ghent,including politic and economic and guilds; the forth part sums up the rule and characterof the capitalism of Flanders.Through the expounding of the development of Flanders cities, we can discover that:when Flanders faced the challenge and change of economic, it could not make the flushof the capitalism to the real capitalism. However, England and other countries took themarket in Europe. This article chooses Ghent to research, and makes research the factorof the rise and fall in Flanders. We can learn the experience of the area of Flanders, andoffer lesson to China in the background of the market economic.
