As economy in China develops rapidly and international cooperation and communication become more and more frequent, college English education confronts a new challenge. According to Basic Requirements of English Course in the Vocational Colleges, students at the technical college should master basic knowledge and skills, possess abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, in order to read and translate English materials related to work with the help of dictionary. It is clearly indicated that the emphasis on the college English teaching is to develop practical abilities and enhance the competitive power in their future career. Therefore,"EGP+ESP" model of college English appears, to which Automobile English belongs. Murcia Rosensweig ever stated that it is more beneficial to master a great amount of vocabulary and the least amount of grammar in the reading comprehension and easy communications than to master nearly all the grammar and a small amount of vocabulary. It is self-evident that vocabulary study is of great importance in the Automobile English course. However, students did not perform well in the study of Automobile English. Seeing from the strategies used by students, the thesis proposes three research questions:(1) How do students view on the vocabulary of Automobile English?(2) How do students use metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies and affective/social strategies?(3) Do the difference of using learning strategies between high score team and low score team exist. when they learn Automobile English? What are differences?(4) Do the differences of using learning strategies between males and females exist, when they learn Automobile English? What are differences?This thesis adopts questionnaire and observation to investigate the strategies used by students. and analyzes the statistics by SPSS, and draw conclusions to help improve class teaching of Automobile English.
