In foreign language teaching, reading functionally interacts with the listening, speaking and writing and provides students the major approaches to acquire information, to accumulate vocabulary, and to be familiar with the syntax. College reading teaching should be adapted to students’cognitive characters and the need of their academic development, and should lay emphasis on improving students’abilities to acquire knowledge, to process information, to analyze and solve the problem in addition to developing students’basic language using skill.In recent years, public attention has been drawn to "Schema Theory in English Reading Teaching". Schema theory is widely regarded to account for the appropriateness in reading comprehension procedure. The schema theory considers that any language material has no meaning itself. It only guides the readers to form the meanings according to their previous knowledge. Schema, characterized of its systematic, dynamic and comprehensive features, would be strengthened with the knowledge constantly acquired by readers. The variety of the schema and the rationality of its structure would play and defining role to improve their reading ability effectively.On the basis of the schema theory, this paper aims to study how to help students to employ effective reading strategies guided by schema theory in college reading teaching practice. The thesis is divided into five parts:Introduction:the author offers us the background and the cause of the study, illustrates the correlative research from domestic and abroad, states the purpose and the significance of the study and finally resents the approaches and the methodologies of the study.Part one introduces the main idea of schema theory. It contains the conception of schema and the schema theory, the development of schema theory and summary of the general ideas of schema theory. Part two:the author analyzes the current situation in college reading teaching, states the necessity of application of schema theory in reading teaching, and further clarify the noticeable privileges of such application and the effects implemented in reading comprehension.Part three, as the gist part of the thesis, introduces the fundamental strategies applied in accordance with the schema theory applied in actual cases in English reading teaching practice.Conclusion part generalizes the whole composition and viewpoints and points out the deficiency of the study and the orientation of correlative study in the future.
