In this highly-speed developing society, reading becomes a most effective methodto obtain information. And reading ability is one of the most important ability studentsshould engaged in the university according to the syllabus for university students. Inrecent years, the role of background knowledge in improving reading comprehensionbe paid more attention and its influence in reading progressing was explained byschema theory. The theory shows each text do not mean anything. Only when readerscontact the lingual&cultural information the texts provide with his/her ownknowledge, do the texts could be understood. The knowledge stored in man’s mind iscalled schemata. Many of linguistics in home and abroad do the research applyingSchema Theory into the teaching of reading these ten years. Results show thatschemata knowledge enables reader strong understanding. If readers are lack of someschemata knowledge or use inappropriate schemata knowledge, their readingcomprehension would be affected. And appropriate schemata knowledge can improvetheir reading comprehension. In order to guide the teachers and students to strength knowledge about whichschemata to improve the reading comprehension, the study does the research on thecorrelation between reading strategies and reading efficiency. The study first discusses the definition of reading efficiency; definition, classification and application of reading strategy and also schema theory, andtheoretical framework are formulated. Second, the study classified22specific itemsbased on the Schema Theory and designed a reading test and a questionnaire onreading strategy. Then the author asked2classes in one of the universities in Hunan tofinish the reading texts and questionnaire about the reading strategies. Finally, the databe analyzed by a software SPSS to find the factors effect reading efficiency. Thequestions of the study are:1. What is the status quo of reading strategies EFL studentsuse based on schemata?2. What is the current situation of students’ reading efficiency?3. How is the reading strategies of low-efficiency readers and high-efficiency readerscorrelated to reading efficiency respectively? What are the differences? Why?Results show that high-efficiency EFL students major in Mathematics&Scientificuse more reading strategies to activate their formal schemata to improve readingcomprehension. The low-efficiency students used more relative reading strategies toactivate their lingual schema in order to understand the words and sentences and are lack of relative strategies to activate the formal schemata so that reduce their readingcomprehension.
