| This thesis tries to study the phenomenon of the projecting verbs of Englishnews texts from interpersonal meaning under theoretical framework of Halliday’sSystemic Functional Linguistics. With the rapid development of the economicsociety, interpersonal communication is more and more frequent and informativetransmission becomes diversify. In our daily life, English news texts play animportant role in delivering English news information. Through building this corpus,this thesis will study the interpersonal function of projecting verbs in English newstexts. According to Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics（SFL）, The threemeta-functions include ideational function, interpersonal function and textualfunction. The further explanation is made for interpersonal function. It refers to thatlanguage has a function of expressing identity, status, attitude, motivation except fordelivering information. Through this function, speakers make themselves take part inanother situational context and it can express role’s relation with situational context.The interpersonal function is realized by mood, modality and person.Projection is a phenomenon used to convey or repeat others or their ownwords.For a long-term, there are lots of researchers to have paid attention to thiscomplex language phenomena. Zeng Lei (2006) in systemic functional linguisticsframework enriched and deepened the theoretical study of" projection" frommultiple dimensions, perspectives, the discussion about the interpersonal functionof the projection. This research gets different interpersonal meanings of differentprojecting clauses and verbs through interpersonal function of projecting verbs in theEnglish news tests, and rearranges the modality of the embody of the interpersonalmeaning of projection.This study is made on the base of consisting of30English news texts fromEnglish news media, The Wall Street Journal，Times weekly, The New York Times.Based on data analysis, quantitative and qualitative researching, the research questions in this thesis are as follows:(1) How are the projecting verbs used in theEnglish news texts?(2) What are the interpersonal meanings of projecting verbs?(3)How is the interpersonal meaning of projecting verbs realized in English news texts?Based on data analysis, English news texts make use of various projecting verbsto express different purposes at the same time. Through the research, this paper getsthe following three findings:（1）Main finding is that in English news textsprojecting verbs play an important role.（2）Through data analysis, differentprojecting verbs realize the interpersonal meaning differently with different effectsand purposes.(3) In news texts the use of projecting verbs has played an importantrole in realizing the interpersonal meaning and making news reports more objectiveand accurate.The results of this study will enrich the study of interpersonal meaning insystemic functional linguistics so that realization of the projecting verbs of theinterpersonal meaning has more in-depth research. At the same time it will be helpfulfor the creation of the news texts for projecting verbs selection, and the accurate andobjective understanding of news readers for the news texts.Meanwhile, the researchis good for the English learners to understand and appreciate the English news texts. |
