The paper adopts the experiment and use qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore the effects of English reading ability on English writing in fluency, accuracy, and complexity. The paper puts forward two research hypotheses:(1) The training and strengthening of reading ability can lead to the improvement of writing capability of English major college students in the regions inhabited by ethnic groups;(2) The training and strengthening of reading ability can lead to the improvement of writing fluency, accuracy and complexity of English major college students in the regions inhabited by ethnic groups. In order to verify the above research hypotheses, the author takes the English major students of Gansu Normal University for Nationalities as the subjects and conducts an experiment which aims to investigate the following research questions: firstly, whether the training and strengthening of reading ability can lead to the improvement of writing capability of English major college students in the regions inhabited by ethnic groups; secondly, whether the training and strengthening of reading ability can lead to the improvement of writing fluency, accuracy and complexity of English major college students in the regions inhabited by ethnic groups. The researcher makes use of four experiment instruments named the Jacob’s scaling of marking the composition, the Wolfe-Quintero’s T-units, and a paper for investigation and the constructive interview of four experimental group students to analyze respectively about the writing performance, writing fluency, accuracy and complexity of the subjects. The result shows that compared with the simple teaching for writing without emphasizing the importance of reading, the training and strengthening of reading ability can really lead to the significant improvement of writing capability of English major college students in the regions inhabited by ethnic groups and the improvement is mainly seen on the writing fluency, accuracy and complexity. Therefore, reading ability affects writing performance, writing fluency, accuracy and complexity respectively. At the same time, the author also has the questionnaire analysis which proves the experiment results. Finally, the author applies Krashen’s Input Hypothesis theory and Swain’s Output Hypothesis theory to explaining the results of the experiment. The study provides the experimental data for the effects of reading ability on the fluency, accuracy and complexity of English writing. This is of certain significance for English teaching, during which the teachers should integrate the two together; and it also has some implications for improving the students’reading and writing ability. However, there are many factors influencing the writing performance and this study can not cover all of them, more complete and deeper researches should be conducted on the relationships between English reading and writing.
