The Evolving Of The Traditional Chinese Patchwork And Its Application In The Modern Woman Clothing

The Traditional Chinese patchwork, originating from the ordinary civil life and referringto the pieces of fabric put into complete clothing according to the composition laws, ispractical and enjoyable. In the earlier agricultural society of China, the bits and pieces ofclothes were sewed together because of short of living materials. It has become a newtechnique of decoration with the character that not only the material can be fully utilized butthe clothing is thicker and not easily worn out.This article, focusing on the clothing culture, has made a research on the following fouraspects, the first is the origin of the traditional Chinese patchwork; the second is the evolutionof its design style, techniques, and cultural connotation; the third the artistic aesthetics and thefourth the application in the modern woman s clothes. Among of them, the first aspect is thepremise and foundation of this article, while the second and third one is the main points. Andthe first three perspectives have provided the theoretical foundation for the fourth one.Firstly, on the basis of collecting literature from the data base, and under the method ofthe text or graphic proof, object analysis and so on, the origin and concept of the traditionalChinese patchwork, whose difference and connection with the patchwork clothing, can beexplored. Meanwhile, take the handed down clothes from the museum and the folk clothinghall in our university for example, together with the method of investigating in the field work,the evolution of the traditional Chinese patchwork can be analyzed from the sewing skills andthe symbolic meaning in literature. Of which changes from different periods can besummarized.Secondly, viewed from the angle of artistic aesthetics, combining with sociology, culturalstudies, folklore and other multi-perspectives, as well as the formation, color and material, theartistic beauty of the traditional Chinese patchwork can be evaluated and its characteristic canbe summarized. And then the access and method of its inheritance and regeneration can bestudied.In the end, in order to accomplish the goal that research for utilization, something shouldbe done as follows. Firstly, survey the existing forms of the traditional Chinese patchwork,and analyze its stylistic application in the modern woman s costumes. Then focus on thedefinition and features of the modern clothing and combine with the evolving traits of thetraditional Chinese patchwork. At last, practice on the utilizing the elements of the patchworkunder the principles of inheritance and innovation.
