Since the late Ming dynasty, the patterns of artifact of traditional costume formed acontinuous tradition. Because its numerous, abandent apperances and rich connotation, artifact patterns have played an important part of adorment patterns of Chinese dress.According to the different function of artifacts, actifact patterns of costume can be divided intothree types: the practical artifact pattern, festival and ceremony artifact pattern, and artifactpattern of spirit. In this three categories,I apt to choose four kinds typical patterns to dofurther elaboration, they are lanterns device, basket device, vase arrangement device, po-gudevice. I will take an quest of theirs history, show characteristics of theirs appearances, andreveal theirs inheritance change, as well as to analysis various factors which affect thosepatterns.I chosse specific kind of course and literatures to demonstrate the characterisitcs ofactifact patterns of dress. However, dress designs are not merely the artistic creation, itsformation, development and evolution were influenced by the era mainstream artifacts, andaffected by political, economic, social, fashion, and aesthetic interest. The Ming and Qingdynasties, the prosperous secular culture and folk festival, high archaize style, developedliterary intelligentsia culture all of this made great impact the patterns. Such as lanterns deviceis the representation of lantern lamps of Lentern Festival, vase arrangement device is thedepiction of indoor dispaly, and po-gu device is the description of antiques.Among all kinds artiifact patterns of traditional costume, practial artifact pattern is themost simple, stable one, take “stirrup sculpt” and “copper cash patter” as examples, both ofthem have no significant change during Ming and Qing dynasty, the only distinct is theproduction of Qing is more delicate and complicated, and show up western style. As to thefestival and ceremony artifact patterns, lenterns pattern and basket pattern are typical.Lantern pattern has a long splendid history, gain a noble rank, and expess the hope of a goldenharvest. The basket pattern of clothes was very common since late Ming dynasty, the rise of itmay tie to the population of basket patterns of porcelain in the some period. In Qing dynasty, basket patterns of clothes became “stylization”and “modularization”, which make theappearance more stable. The classic artifact pattern of spirit of clothes in Qing and Mingdynasty are vase arrangment pattern and po-gu pattern. Generally speaking, the artistic styleof vase arrangement pattern developed along two main lines,“elegant display” and“homophonic ping”, respectively, the former maintain part of the vase pattern keep a elegantand refined apperance, the latter one give birth to countless auspicious pattern, and thenbecome vulgar. The artifact pattern of spirit of clothes frist turned up in late Ming dynasty, aim to “cultivate noble virtue”. Because the dense archaize atomphere in Ming and Qingdynasty,(especially Qing dynasty), folks production lots of po-gu patterns, and combined itwith other auspcious pattern which finally made po-gu pattern lost in a poor aesthetic.
