Speech sound, as the physical basis of language, is not only the nature oflanguage but also the basis of language teaching. Phonetics is the startingpoint for any language learning,so English teaching should begin withphonetic teaching, which is one of the most important parts in languageteaching. However, for a long time the phonetic teaching in our country hasbeen neglected and the overall level is not high. It is contrary to the nature oflanguage teaching and the target of Higher Vocational TechnicalCollege(HVTC),which aims at cultivating high-level practical and skilledtalents. What is more, the rapid development of market economy calls forhigher phonetic level of HVTC English majors. So it is necessary and urgentto improve the phonetic level of HVTC English majors. In the process of language communication, native speakers rely onsuprasegmental features more than segmental features to convey their ideasand attitudes, but in actual phonetic teaching, suprasegmental features tend tobe neglected. At present the foreign study on phonetic teaching mainlyfocuses on the process of phonetic acquisition and the hindering or promotingfactors, and most of the phonetic research in owr country in recent years centeron the macroscopic aspect and very few involve specific phonetic teaching strategies.Based on the reasons above, this paper selected the English major*freshman of Inner Mongolia Technology Vocational College as researchobject.57students were required to read a passage and their readings wererecorded. Then their stress, rhythm and intonation of the suprasegmentalphoneme were co-analyzed by the researcher, together with one English andtwo Chinese phonetic teachers, who listened to the participants’ recordedspeech, identiyf the problems they found and further attributed them.Following this analysis, the researcher proposed that communicative approachshould be used in English phonetic teaching to improve English learners’communicative competence, which focuses on the communicative function oflanguage and enable the learners to practice stress, rhythm and intonation innatural context. This teaching approach is consistent with the essentialrequirement of the language teaching and the aim of HVTC. Guided by thetheories of KrasherVs Monitor and Language Transfer, further specificclassroom teaching strategies were put forward, aimed at opening up abroader space for the suprasegmental teaching and improving the phoneticlevel of HVTC English majors.
