Textbooks, as the learning resources and tools to students, arefundamental to teaching. With the further development of curriculumreform, the National Educational Committee proposes the policy of “onesyllabus with various textbooks”. The state uniform textbooks are reallya hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend.The state uniform textbooks pay more attention to the fundamentalquality in school students and the unity of education as well, so it isimpossible to take the real situations of different districts and schoolsinto full account. As a result,they leave school-based textbooks withcomparatively large space to satisfy the diverse needs of society, and canmake it possible for schools to exert more influence in this field.With the deepening of the reform in the college English teaching andthe development of characteristic teaching in every university, theconstruction of the school-based textbooks in College English willbecome a general trend, which will undoubtedly broaden the space forchoosing materials. However, the question is whether the school-basedtextbook can correspondent with its expected objectives. Therefore, it isparticularly important for the evaluation for school-based textbookswhich can strength the management level of textbooks and give aguarantee to the textbook quality selection. Coursebook evaluation so farmainly concentrated on the study of national uniform textbooks whileignoring analysis and evaluation of school-based textbooks to someextent. The main concern and interest of this study is to evaluate theschool-based textbook which has somewhat practical significance forenhancing the quality of school-based English teaching materials.This research chooses the reading materials in the textbook “Experiencing English (pre-band)” as the object. Combining staticanalysis with dynamic analysis, the paper employs documentary,questionnaire and interviewing approaches to obtain analytical data.Static analysis focuses on topic, genre, and readability includingvocabulary and grammar, cultural content, exercises design of readingmaterials. Dynamic analysis is made on the basis of the investigationabout the reading materials of textbooks of Experiencing English(pre-band) in Inner Mongolia Normal University, in order to gather thefeedback from the teachers and students. The results show that readingmaterials in Experiencing English (pre-band) can satisfy most of thelearner’s needs and is beneficial for developing learners’ readingabilities. However, reading materials also some deficiencies. Forexample, pay inadequately to the reading strategies-learning; exercisesdesign is stereotypical etc.The research attempts to demonstrate advantages and disadvantagesof reading material of textbooks to prove if the reading material coulddevelop students reading ability and concludes with some suggestions onthe compilation and teaching of the books with the hope of makingEnglish reading teaching and learning more effectively.
