A Research Report On The Application Of Sense Explanation Method For Poetic Metaphor Translation In Ancient Chinese Poems

Along with the more and more frequent exchanges between China and theinternational world, carrying forward the splendid culture and fantastic civilization ofChina to the outside world has become an urge. Poetry is the language crystallizationof the5000-year culture. To express poetry in the TL with its real essence is of greatsignificance and value to the spread of Chinese culture.Metaphors are pervasive in our daily life, ways of thinking, and languages. Inpoetry, metaphors are more commonly seen. The universally existing metaphors alsopervade Chinese language with no exception. As a significant language feature ofChinese poetry, poetic metaphors appear in Chinese poetry in a wide range; thereforethe translation of metaphor is essential in the process of ancient Chinese poetrytranslation. Taking the translation of some Jueju in Tang Dynasty as examples, thisreport mainly discusses the translation approaches of poetic metaphor in ancientChinese poetry, with major emphasis laid on the application of sense explanationmethod by giving examples in detail.Based on the theoretical foundation of conceptual metaphor in cognitivelinguistics, this translation report adopts experimental approach and analysis approachas main research methods, selects20jueju in Tang Dynasty as translation objects, andlays special emphasis on the translation of poetic metaphor in them. In the translationpractice, three approaches are mainly adopted as follows: First, translating metaphorsinto metaphors; second, translating into similes; third, explaining in sense. Out of the20jueju translated by the author, four are selected for discussion in this report, and theapplicable situations for sense explanation method in the translation of poeticmetaphors are especially stated.
