The book Explanations to Guoyu, written by Wei Zhao, is the oldest and the only existing completed version of the annotation of Guoyu which was completed during the period of Middle Ancient Chinese. The volume of the book, including approximate10.7thousand words, reflects the basic characteristics of Middle Ancient Chinese. In addition, it also contains a number of oral words and special terms which worth our concern.Mainly focusing on the part of Jinyu, this paper made a preliminary investigation and analysis about the vocabulary of Explanations to Guoyu. The first chapter explained the significance of this topic and presented the main conditions of the book. The second chapter analyzed the characteristics of the words and phrases and presented the study value in the influence to the dictionary’s compiling. The third chapter mainly made annotation and explanations on44words which were seen as the emergence of new. Some are not smooth in writing and obscure in meaning while some are common in writing and different in meaning. The fourth chapter took a monographic study on the two-tone words and put emphasis on the rules of two-tone words’word-building.The study of the words and phrases of Explanations to Guoyu embodied the particularity and importance of annotation language and promoted the development of the research in middle ancient Chinese.
