According to the previous researches, the auther did three experiments to examine howstrong target complexity affects Object Substitution Masking. First,we take figures as objectstimulus in our first two experiments. And then in experiment3, we take numbers as objectstimulus. In experiment1we take square, regular hexagon and regular octagon as targetrespectively, in order to examine whether OSM is affected by the complexity of the exteriorlines of the targe figures t. In experiment2we take square with one, two and three linesinside as target respectively, in order to examine whether OSM is affected by thecomplexity of the interior lines of the target. In experiment3we take Arabic numerals,Chinese lowercase digital and Chinese capital digital as target respectively, in order toexamine whether OSM is affected by the complexity of the lines of the numbers.30post-graduated students participated in our experiments. All of them had normal orcorrected-to-normal vision. The experiments were carried out in a testing room withstandard over-head fluorescent lighting. Detailed results are as follows:(1) OSM is affected by the complexity of the exterior lines of the target when we takefigures as the object stimulus. The figures with more complicated exterior lines producestronger OSM than those figures with simpler exterior lines.(2) OSM is affected by the complexity of the interior lines of the target when we takefigures as the object stimulus. The figures with more complicated interior lines producestronger OSM than those figures with simpler interior lines.(3) OSM is affected by the complexity of the exterior lines of numbers when we takethe numbers as the object stimulus. The numbers with more complexity exterior linesproduce stronger OSM than those with simpler exterior lines.
