This article aims to sketched out the musical exchange between Chinese and Western from the North Dynasties to Tang Dynasty (北朝隋唐), in accordance with the order of the time and from the point of view of the excavated musical instruments and historical documents. Also An attempt was made to find the traces of the tributaries that Chinese music spread to the west.The text is consisted of the following four parts:The first chapter over-viewed the academic history about the Chinese and Western music and cultural exchanges during North Dynasties to Tang Dynasty(北朝隋唐).Especially for those binding studies combined archaeological objects and historical documents. And confirmed the feasibility of this study.The second chapter is in tabular form, classified the common musical instruments during this period from the point of origin, shape, position in the band.the combination of conditions, and the historical documents.It is on the basis of excavated musical instruments during this time.The third chapter analysised the conclusions reached from txcavated musical instruments, comparing with the historical documents, finally teased out the basics of musical exchange between Chinese and Western and found regular pattern of musical propagation.The fourth chapter launched a preliminary demonstration about the possibility of Chinese music spread to the west.Although this phenomenon is not the main trend of the exchange between Chinese and Western, also rare in the historical documents, it’s a real phenomenon viewed form the archaeological materials.
