| This thesis studies the difference of adverb between Chinese and English, bycomparing "Shih-shuo Hsin-yü" written by Liu Yiqing during the Song period inNan dynasty with English translation edition of "Shih-shuo Hsin-yü: A NewAccount of the World" written by Richard B. Mather.Recently, the translation of the Chinese literary classis is thriving so that therelated works are springing out. As a way to introduce Chinese greatest culturalachievements to people all around the world, government also pays a greatattention. But lacking of knowledge of Chinese culture and an inadequate grasp ofthe Chinese written language have led the translators into many errors."Shih-shuo Hsin-yü" is a master piece of the Chinese literary classis, whichis a microcosm of the The Wei and Jin Dynasties with a high value."Shih-shuoHsin-yü: A New Account of the World" not only shows the structure of originaltext ("Shih-shuo Hsin-yü") but also retains the original intentions and ideas, so thatit is confirmed to be a successful work. So those two works offer a good material toresearch.According to the difference of the meaning and function, this thesis dividesthe adverb into six classes, which are Time adverbã€Adverb of toneã€Adverb ofdenyingã€Adverb of the degreeã€Range adverbã€Adverb of state. This thesis analyzesthe translating methods of every adverb to conclude the law of adverb translationand evaluate the "Shih-shuo Hsin-yü: A New Account of the World". |
