This thesis, on the basis of Cognitive Linguistics, attempts to reveal the renamingmechanism of Chinese construction “A不叫A,叫B” from Internet by means of aHierarchical Renaming Model, which does cross-domain mapping and finds motivationbetween source domain (formal expressions in modern Chinese) and target domain(cyber language expressions) from pronunciation, form, meaning and usage. Theconstruction meaning is that under the network environment, the Internet users prefer torename the formal expression “A” as the typical Internet expression “B” in order toexpress some special pragmatic meaning such as humor, euphemism, irony, compliment, and criticism. So far almost no detailed discussions or data analysis about this construction couldbe found in central linguistic journals. In addition, the present theoretical theories couldnot provide convincing explanation for this special linguistic phenomenon. Thus, thispaper set up a brand new theoretical model Hierarchical Renaming Model (short forHRM) based on the core thoughts about the Conceptual Metaphor and ICM to explain it.Moreover,238items are collected from the Baidu search engine and Google searchengine and these items will be analyzed from the syntax, semantics and pragmatics withthe model. This paper first focuses on a general introduction to this thesis, consisting ofmotivation, significance of the study, purpose of the study, data collection, methodologyand layout of the thesis. Then, this paper reviews previous studies on constructiontheory, cyber language and the similar studies on “A不叫A,叫B” and theirdivergences and gaps are summarized. In the hope of bridging the gap of the previousstudies, this paper proposes the Hierarchical Renaming Model and uses it as thetheoretical model to explain the construction “A不叫A,叫B”. After that, the relativelyclosed-corpora is applied to the model from pronunciation, form, meaning and usagewith the illustration of the data. The construction will be analyzed from the aspect of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The research shows that this theoretical model is verysituable to this construction. In the end, this paper draws the main conclusion of thewhole thesis and concluded three main contributions as follows:1. The construction “A不叫A,叫B” is a special construction, which has fewdetailed discussions about it in linguistic central journals. Thus, the attemptto discuss this construction from the perspective of Cognitive Linguisticscould be a small contribution to the study of linguistics.2. This paper attempts to analyze the construction in a systematic way basedon the self-made closed corpus, taking the first step of studying therenaming construction. This could also be a small contribution to the studyof linguistics.3. This paper attempts to set up a brand new theoretical model HierarchicalRenaming Model to reveal the renaming mechanism of the construction “A不叫A,叫B”. The proposal of Hierarchical Renaming Model is thebiggest highlight of this paper. In the end, shortages and limitations about this paper will be pointed out and somesuggestions for the future study will be put forward.
