Traditionally, language is seen as a tool for human communication. However, the interdisciplinary study of linguistics and other subjects indicates that the role of language in spreading culture and thinking is becoming more and more obvious. Therefore, a lot of attention has been paid to the social functions of language and its relationship with the politics, economy and the whole society at large, especially against the background of the globalization worldwide. In the trend of globalization, knowledge, resources, talents and so on are flowing around the world. What is more important is the invisible spread of ideology and value, the medium of which is language. It is no doubt that language always influences the way people conceptualize the world. The encoded language makes or influences the subconsciousness of language users and further becomes part of their common sense, intervening the thinking and behavior of individuals in the society. It is needless to say that language ideology makes contribution to the linguistic study from both micro and macro perspectives. The thesis chooses language ideology as the research subject, aiming to analyze language use and language learning in an ideological approach and reflect the current development of socioiinguistics. Three major issues are discussed in the thesis, namely, the reason why English becomes the dominant language in the world, the relationship between language use and identity construction, and the pedagogical implication of foreign language policy. All these questions can be explained by the ideological factors hidden behind these phenomena. Firstly, the history of English globalization indicates that the ascribed status of English by the state power becomes naturalized ideology in the public. There is complicated relationship between language, power and ideology. Secondly, the ideological position of people reflects that social context and identity influence one another mutually and language use. Language is no longer just a way for communication but a label on each person. Lastly, language education plays an important role in the globalization and there is close relationship between language policy and language education. The social and political factors in a globalizing world have influenced the ideologies of the state towards English but different individual ideologies in real situations have affected the actual implementation of language planning.Since the topic of the thesis is closely related to the real life, the author discusses the complex relationships between language and ideology from both micro and macro perspectives under the framework of theory and case studies.
