In a sense, fiber art is one of the numerous categories of modern art. The public’s understanding of fiber art is always based on traditional concepts. In other words, they believe the majority of materials selected by fiber art belong to fabric fiber, which is also known as cotton, cloth materials, etc. The main modes of making fiber artworks include spinning, knitting and sewing, which are mainly expressed in the form of wall hanging, tapestry, etc. Since the origin of fiber art bases on its practicability, when it is represented to the public as a piece of artwork, it cannot get rid of the viewers’function-based doubt, which means it is stuck in a situation of being deemed to be centralized more on the function and less on the art. Furthermore, many of them cannot be represented as an independent work and can be easily duplicated. As a matter of fact, it is modern fiber artists’greatest hope that they could be oriented by various modern art concepts and free from the constraint of traditional practicability when creating a new form of art integrating creativity, concepts, participation and modern aesthetic features. It is on the exact basis that I, as a postgraduate student specialized on this discipline, hope to represent another idea through my own work, thus reversing the way the public defines fiber artworks. Such traditional views are mainly like this:fiber artworks are merely tapestries spun by different kinds of cotton, jute and silk; fiber artworks are fluffy cloth covers and knitting wool in either visual sense or tactile sense; fiber artworks are made by different weaving, knitting, embroidery, dyeing and finishing means. The architectural environment, science and technology have witnessed a flourish in1970s, thanks to which, the concept of modern fiber art has been established. In a sense, architectural space is the environment modern fiber art needs to survive. Entering modern architectural space and enjoying a flourish is the only way fiber art must pass. In consideration of this, all modern construction means, bold attempts of different materials, contemporary creative concepts and multi-dimensional spatial form make it possible for modern fiber art to truly make a leap from decoration-based small space to creation-based large space. Moreover, a historic transformation from the previous wall tapestries, which are relatively in a passive and dependent state to the space, to the modern fiber art, which is considered as a space medium mode directly and actively involved in spatial creation.Under the exact philosophy, I start my graduation design from expanding the materials and modes of fiber art and comprehensively utilizing fabrics, metals and metal fiber materials, hoping to create a large-span material contrast effect and stereo-effect with two to three dimensions. My aim is to fit this into the public space in modern architectures and harmonize with the atmosphere, thus further expressing the individual characteristics of each material I select. For example, silk is gorgeous, graceful, exquisite and light, and it has strong plasticity. Integrating silk into the creation of indoor wall decoration, restoring the original form of silk, endowing this material a new type and combining other materials in application can further intensifying its features. Metals have different characters and traits, for example, noble and gorgeous gold, elegant and restraining silver, simple and unsophisticated copper, resolute and steadfast steel, etc. On the basis of my comprehension of the quality and aesthetic feeling of metal materials, I utilize the individual features of different metals to create an abundant material contrast effect through overlying, split joint and hollow. Apart from this, I bend metal fiber materials with my hands and make different gentle three-dimensional models with hard metal fibers, which further intensify the visual tension of metal materials in an intangible way. Noble and elegant silk fits indoor decoration the most and can endow the cold modern architectural space with tender feelings. Matched with the contrast effects of various metal materials, these two kinds of materials complement each other in texture, color and brightness and realize a resonation with the viewers under the impact of visual effect between quality and texture, thus further representing their own charms in quality. That’s my original intention of this design.
