Based On The Presupposition Theory To Analyze Counterfactual Conditionals

The object of this study is counterfactual conditionals; its research has a long history, and it gradually forms a mature theory after a certain process. From the early theory of co-existence to the late theory of modal logic of possible world, all these theories are used to depict the true value of counterfactual conditionals. But the counterfactual conditionals itself also has some difficulties, such as the description of the problem about related conditions, law problem and some counterexamples. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to seek a kind of method, which can solve preliminary, or even completely these problems about counterfactual conditionals.The first part of the paper comes straight to the point, introducing the definition of counterfactual conditionals, characteristics and previous scholar’s study theory. This part focuses on the problem existing in the study of counterfactual conditionals. The second part of the article, from the counterfactual conditionals to presupposition theory, introduces the relevant background knowledge of the presupposition theory and previous research achievements of scholars. The third part of the article is a key breakthrough and the innovation point of this article. It combines the theory of presupposition and previous research results of counterfactual conditionals, and puts forward a method, which aims to research and analyze the counterfactual conditionals based on the presupposition theory.With the increasingly specialized development of modern science theory and technology, another aspect should not be ignored:the development of interdisciplinary."Presupposition" and "Counterfactual Conditionals" is not only a linguistic but also the logic research object. We try to analyze and solve several problems of counterfactual conditionals in this paper from the perspective of presupposition. Therefore, Analyzing and comparing the theories of counterfactual conditionals, we combine with some presupposition theories and put forward the truth definition of counterfactual conditionals. Using the possible world theory and the presupposition theory, this definition is formed by modifying and recreating the theory of co-existence and the theories of R.C.Stalnaker and D.Lewis. Based on our truth definition of counterfactual conditionals, the difficulties of counterfactual conditionals can be resolved to some degree or can be explained reasonably.
