The flourishing development of French popular accordion music has added to the entire accordion circle or even to the world popular music a subtle hint of crispness and vitality. By use of the musical instrument accordion, Frenchmen have spread their own sentiment to the people worldwide while enriching their own enjoyment. They have integrated various world class popular elements into their own culture and have formed a unique French style. French popular accordion music has set the trend for "diversification" of world accordion music. Frederic Deschamps is the most representative accordion educator and accordionist in present France and his performance art of popular accordion music is widely imitated by professionals of accordion circle. His pupils from various countries, for example, Jerome Richard(French), Grayson Masefield (New Zealand) Pitt(Serbia), Liu Zhao(China),Tan Jialiang(China) have times and again won first prizes in various international contests, such as, Klingenthal (Germany) and Castelfidardo (Italy),as well as the C.I.A. World Cup. He has spread French popular accordion music to the world over through his itinerant performances and teaching symposiums nearing one hundred times all over the world. Especially, in recent years, some scores of concerts and teaching symposiums of "master classes" given in China have aroused enthusiastic angle of home accordion circle professionals and even boosted rapid development of popular accordion music in China. Through analysis on Frederic Deschamps’basic teaching and performing philosophies and text and deductive analysises on several pieces of most representative French popular accordion music, in the hope of throwing out a minnow to catch a whale, this thesis is expected hereby to be helpful in theory and practical performance for both professionals and outsiders learning popular accordion music.This thesis comprises of four chapters. The first chapter briefly presents development background and major features of French popular accordion music. Second chapter introduces Frederic Deschamps-the most representative accordion educator and accordionist, including his personal profile and teaching and performing features. Third chapter mainly analyzes the arranged French popular accordion music work 《Les parapluies de Cherbourg》, applying Frederic Deschamps’ basic teaching and performing philosophies to deduction and analysis on popular accordion music.
