The production and development of medicinal materials had made a great progress in southwest of Tang Dynasty. It is important to measure the level of natural resources and social economic development of the region. Researching the medicinal materials in southwest of Tang Dynasty is helpful to deepen the knowledge of regional economic development of Tang Dynasty. Meanwhile, it also provides useful historical reference for revitalization of medicinal materials industry in southwest, as well as promotion of the local economic development nowadays.Study on the species and geographic distribution of medicinal materials in southwest of Tang Dynasty is mainly based on tributes materials in historical records, such as geographical records in New Book of Tang, Tang Liu Dian, Yuan He Jun Xian Tu Zhi, Tong Dian and Tai Ping Huan Yu Zhi,etc. And the native production materials recorded in ancient herb works are important, for example, Xin Xiu Ben Cao, Ben Cao Shi Yi and Qian Jin Yi Fang. After researching local records, notes, novels as well as poems, the dissertation analyzes and summarizes the characteristics of the species and distribution of medicinal materials in southwest. Firstly, varieties are plentiful. There are117species in all that contain plants, animals and minerals, and tribute herb species are74. Secondly, coverage rate is high. Several herbs distribute widely. Thirdly, producing areas distribute obvious regionally. Sichuan Basin and the western Sichuan Plateau mainly produce plant herb, and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau is rich in animal herb. The producing states have the species-distribution tendency, too.Concentration of medicinal origins and expansion of development scales accelerate formation of four specialized producing areas. They are musk, cinnabar, angelica and gold. Their common characteristics are as follows:firstly, range of producing areas is large or expands increasingly, which is convenient for gathering producing. Secondly, regional output is high. Nationwide, it occupies a certain position in similar products. Thirdly, the quality is good. They are national high-quality products. Fourthly, related technology has improved.The development of medicinal materials in southwest of Tang Dynasty has a profound influence. Herb’s transactions promote the prosperity of regional market, and stimulate the formation of urban-rural market. What’s more, it lays the foundation for the development of later herb market. The income of the herb trade occupies a share of regional economy and local financial revenue. Affected by the subjective needs and social conduct, herb in southwest becomes a popular object singed by poets. The prosperous medicine poetries constitute the colorful medical culture of Tang Dynasty. In southwest China, herb is an important factor to name the geographical names, and a great number of famous herbs are named by their origins.
