The publication of Literary Women by Ellen Moers in1976has opened up the study on the female gothic and has linked the female gothic novels with feminism. As an independent genre, the female gothic novels are possessed of their own characteristics in terms of theme, characterization, terror creation and so on. As two representatives of the female gothic novels, there are similarities and differences in dealing with the gothic elements in Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. This paper intends to compare the two novels from three female gothic elements by means of intensive reading. The paper consists of three parts:introduction, main body and bibliography. Introduction summarizes the current situation of the female gothic study on the two novels both at home and abroad and the research results concerning this topic. Then I will introduce the topic of my paper, its meaning and the procedures of my research.Main body is divided into three chapters:The first chapter mainly analyzes the similarities and differences of the settings in the two novels. As the foundation to create the gothic atmosphere, the gothic settings reveal the similarities and differences of the keynote for the two novels. The second chapter emphasizes the similarities and differences of the two novels from the gothic events and suspense. The gothic events and suspense play an important role in the creation of the gothic terror. Therefore, the analysis of these two aspects can reflect the similarities and differences of the gothic atmosphere of the two novels. The third chapter focuses on the comparison of characterizations of the two novels. I will compare the characters in the novels in terms of villain-heroes, victimized females and independent heroines to analyze characters’ influence on the gothic atmosphere. Then I will associate characterization with the themes of the novels to draw the similarities and differences of the characterizations and the reasons for such characterizations.
