Thomas Stearns Eliot’s status cannot be ignored in the history ofwestern literature. As a poet, critic and playwright, T.S.Eliot’sworks have always been highly concerned in the literary world. Hispoem, the waste land, is known throughout the world, and hisliterary reviews and speech drafts get the favor of many scholars inthe history of eastern and western literature. In addition, his dramasalso have an enormous response in the western literatus. As the fiveclassic anthology of Chinese translation came out, Eliot’s dramaworks also have aroused extensive attention in Chinese literatus.His drama works are mostly about the themes of murder andconvert to religion to save, and involves the category of familyethics.Eliot is a person who constantly pursues the happiness anddevotes himself to his life full of happiness. Therefore, pursuit ofhappiness is the eternal theme in Eliot’s drama works which refer tothe content of family, including the family responsibility, maritalharmony, parent-child education, human nature of good and evil,belief attribution, eternal cycle of birth and death and so on, whichcan’t deviate from its path towards happiness. The chapter onereveals the family relationships of Eliot’s plays to analyze the spiritof devotion. The chapter two reveals the family ethics of Eliot’splays, in which the marriage and family in the drama works is in harmonious or disharmonious state, and in which the familymembers should use the virtue and kindness to influence and treatpeople around us, at the same time, they should insist that they willlead a happy life if they own the faith to happiness. The chapterthree expounds mainly the reasons of the formation of the view offamily ethics as well as the enlightenment to our contemporarysocial life.The eastern and western literary world has extensive researchon Eliot, which mainly concentrated in the poetic theory andmulti-angle exploration about the concrete works of poetry, besides,in the perspective of religion, anti-feminist, anti-modernism, andnarratology. From the perspective of love, marriage and familyethics, this paper is to analyze the several classic of Eliot’s plays.
