In Chinese contemporary literature, Shi Tiesheng was a distinctive writer. Two-thirds of his59years life course was spent on wheel chair while one-fifth on dialysis. However, he had written literary works of over three million words, which were relatively unrestrained and unique, before his death in2010. At the meantime, as a spirit model of the time, he had always been referred by and compared with others writers constantly. Existing studies about Shi Tiesheng have mainly discussed his life experience and writing characteristics, leaving the interpretation of his entire creation course and spiritual values to be further explored.Based on close reading and with standard of ideality, transcendence, spirituality as well as times, this thesis focuses on the meaning of Shi Tiesheng to Chinese contemporary literature, the chain of spirit through his works, and the significance of his perspectives about life and existence.The main body of this thesis is consist of four chapters, which respectively expound the following:The respond and return stroke at nothingness and dilemma; The impression of life and process theology; The belief and religion-like thoughts; The paradox of life and the ideal of love. These four parts as a whole can be seen as a complete circle, bringing the spiritual expression in literary works of Shi Tiesheng together and demonstrating the position and value of him in Chinese contemporary literature as a belletrist.
