English writing as an important productive and communicative skill is alwaysconsidered the most significant skill among the four basic skills of English language,thus attracts many English scholars and teachers, and increasingly, great importancehas been attached to it. The most fundamental problem of writing is the lack ofinterest and no confidence in writing, and thus students feel very difficult to start acomposition and have nothing to say in writing practice. Product approach, processapproach and genre approach are the three dominant approaches in the field of writingin China, but these approaches have advantages as well as disadvantages. Theresearcher applies the creative thinking strategies to process approach in order tostimulate students’ inspiration, increase their interest and strengthen their confidenceto accomplish the ultimate goal of improving their English writing ability.To test the effectiveness of creative thinking strategies in process writing, theresearcher takes a series of measures. Through the method of tests before and after theexperiment, the researcher can know their writing levels and the improvement theyhave achieved. Through the questionnaires, the researcher can know the changes oftheir interests and confidence in writing before and after the experiment. Throughinterview, the researcher can understand students’ response to the new teachingmethod better. The students in experiment are60English majors in Shenyang NormalUniversity. The students in experimental class adopt creative thinking strategies inprocess writing while students in control class use process approach only. And this experiment is conducted for15weeks. And the research questions are:1. Will thecreative thinking strategies in process writing be effective in improving students’writing competence?2. Can creative thinking strategies in process writing increasestudents’ confidence and interest? The findings of the research are:1. Students’competence in content did develop a lot with the help of creative thinking strategies.2.Creative thinking strategies did motivate students’ interests and confidence in writing.
