This thesis is a musical ethnography which is the first case applying the method ofethnomusicology to study and investigate on the spot the soundscape at the “Buddhism YogaYankou” Ceremony of the Buddhist Ritual in the Guoen Temple. There are two findings in thison-the-spot investigation: I. The first finding is that the live ceremony of “Buddhism YogaYankou” nowadays comes down in one continuous line with the version of traditional documents, which certifies the relative stability of the religious and cultural inheritance among the “insiders”.II. It is found in the analysis of the record of the soundscape that the soundscape at theceremony of “Buddhism Yoga Yankou” has something in common with those common musicalforms, which lies in their mutual musicality, and that the soundscape is also different fromcommon musical forms because of its non-musicality, that is, plenty of “linguistic” soundscape. This founding indicates that the musical cognition in the research of religious and ritualsoundscape is not enough, because a large number of important ritual contents are demonstratedthrough and penetrated by the “non-musical” soundscape. This record and research on theethnographic case of the ceremony of “Buddhism Yoga Yankou” at the Buddhist Ritual in theGuoen Temple not only helps understand the persistence and concrete practice that the Buddhist“insiders” hold in inheriting and spreading the Buddhist cultures and traditions, but also adds vividand fresh research materials for the research on the soundscape of Buddhist rituals in the area ofSouth of the Five Ridges.
