A Research On Audience Andtheatricality

As the core concept of Dramatic Studies, Theatricality needs to reveal the essence of drama, namely the redial difference between drama and the other human literary and artistic products. As for the essence of Drama, there are two main ideas,"imitation" and "conflict", both of which are not perfect solution to the problem of Drama. Most authors think, as a part of aesthetic research, the study of Theatricality should be objective and scientific, basing on the most basic facts of nature to explore the essence of drama. According to this point, authors agree with F.Sarcey’s "Audience Theory", supporting that the dramatic essence exists in the unique group, the drama audiences.Though Sarcey presented the extremely objective and scientific "Audience Theory", he did not give a full explain on this view. It lies in some concrete details: first, the theory does not analyze drama audiences as a unique group; secondly, he points out that there is a common factor between drama and drama audience, through which, the two sides can form a kind of tacit agreement, and this agreement and its contents is just the unique thing making an art a drama. But Sarcey also does not give a detailed description about this kind of tacit agreement and its contents.Sarcey’s "Audience Theory" has drawn wide attention since it was published; initiating more studies on drama audience, but no one has redefined drama through audience as the essence of it. Authors try to do the work of three aspects by the way of compare and gradually elimination:one aspect is the deep analysis of the characteristics of the audience and the effect of dramatic essence; the other one is to carry on the concrete analysis of the agreement between drama and audience as the dramatic connotation; the third one is to study the significance of tragedy and comedy basing on "Audience Theory".
