Address forms relate to language and society closely. As they reflect people’s relationshipin communication, address forms also reflect different people’s mind and value conception. Tosome extent, these words are cultural signs of the development process of human society.Address forms are important parts of language, which have been main research project in sociallinguistics and cultural linguistics in recent years. By now some learners have made productiveresearches in the classification and function of the address forms. However, it is obvious that theanalysis of the connocational difference of Chinese-English address forms and the deeper causesof the differences are in need of further research. Mother tongue plays an important role in theprocess of foreign language learning. Language transfer naturally exists in foreign languagelearning. It can be found out that one of the main reasons of the foreign language learners’mistake on address forms is the large relying on their mother tongue, which makes negativelanguage transfer. Address forms have unique pragmatic characteristics and cultural specialty.The only master of the basic rules of the address forms are far from enough in the cross-culturalcommunication. This essay focus on the comparison and acquisition of the Chinese-Englishaddress forms under the aspect of the semantic transfer of the mother tongue, which aims afurther analysis of the causes of the differences of the connocational meaning on theChinese-English address forms with the help of Lado’s theory on language transfer,and tries to make suggestive directions with the help of theories on foreign language methodologies for theacquisition of Chinese-English address forms to make a more harmonious cross-culturalcommunication. The essay can be divided into seven parts:The fist part is the prologue. This part puts forward the purpose, significance, ways andarrangement of the essay. The second part is the comment of the bibliography and the theorybackground. The third part demonstrates the definition, classification, character and function.And also explains the connocational meaning of address forms. The fourth part is the comparisonof Chinese-English address forms. They are relative address forms, non-relative address formsand social address forms.The fifth part is the analysis of the deeper causes of the differences onChinese-English address forms. The main causes are social environment, traditional culture,thinking manner, value conception, authority relationship and relative law principle. The sixthpart is the research on the teaching and acquisition of Chinese-English address forms. Theseventh part is the conclusion.
