In this paper the author has explored three types of female image in thebeginning and end of plays of Caoyu and has tried analysis of his creation motivation,revealing that the writer tries to express his personality anxiety by creating differentwomen’s images throughout his life.In the1930s, the writer created “epochal” female images, who have distinctivepersonality and self-consciousness and rebellious spirit against feudal autocracy rule.Combining the writer’s life experience as well interpretation of his personalitytemperament, the author believes that the reason why he intended to create thosestrong and independent female images was that only with those lively women in hismind could the writer dared to pursue freedom in his life. Through those femaleimages, he realized what he wouldn’t have realized in real life to fight againstdespotism and fight for freedom.In the1940s, the writer created some female images who were devoted tosacrifice themselves in the image of “servility”. Those female images had no clearself-awareness and no clear personality characteristics. In the1940s, the writer hadgained his popularity with both honor and various kinds of criticism, which gave himpressure on the one hand. In his writing, he would please that criticism and yield tomainstream critic discourse. On the other hand, this life stage witnessed hismisfortune in marriage and he was longing for a servant-like wife who would takecare of his life so that he could concentrate his attention to writing and the wholefamily would be centered on him. Therefore, the writer created the female imageswho would be willing to sacrifice her whole life to her family.Since1949, the writer created the images of “National Mother” with features of“Nobleness, Grand and Wholeness”, which was just a cheese piece in the politicalgame. Those figures have no women’s normal emotional desires, are symbol andconcept of revolution and are spokespersons for political ideology. The reason why hecreated those figures was that he lost his independent thinking power during thepowerful brainwashing movements, making him unable to create independently andwrite to accomplish routine work. That was why he created those “Goddess” figureswithout human characteristics and women’s features. Having created different female images, the writer release of his complexfeelings and relieve his personality anxiety. The process during which he created thoseimages was one in which he lost his free and independent spirit, indicating that hegradually gave up his pursuit of free thinking and that he was coward in nature, whichis the reason why he couldn’t shoulder the responsibility of helping womenaccomplish the task of individual liberation. Chinese intellectuals are universallycoward in nature and have no determined will to fight. Therefore, only when Chineseadvanced intellectuals get rid of their own vulnerability can they shoulder theresponsibility of enlightenment, will Chinese enlightenment cause not be an emptytalk and will liberation of Chinese women not be a remote dream.
