Listening is one of the basic skills and one of the most important aspects in daily communication. Listening comprehension is critical to the improvement of the students’ English learning. The New College English Curriculum Requirements issued by National Ministry of Education also emphasize the importance of developing students’ ability to use English, especially in listening and speaking, so the listening teaching mode deserved more and more attention. The research on the theory of problem-based learning becomes more and more at home and abroad. But few have tried to do the research from the perspective of students of non-English major.Under this circumstance, the experiment combining the mode of teaching with students of non-English major is carried out to find out the differences in the use of different teaching modes. This research focuses on the following questions:1) Are there any differences for students’listening ability between the traditional teaching mode (grammar-based mode) and the PBL mode? What are they?2) In which aspects are these differences manifested?3) How does PBL influence the improvement of college students’ English listening competence and learning in the future?All subjects are freshmen from4intact classes, Anhui Science and Technology University. The students of experimental group are majoring in Agronomic Education and the students of control group in Facilities for agriculture. The thesis focuses on the use of teaching mode of PBL in detail. The instruments of research include the test questionnaire and interview. The data is analyzed in Independent Samples T-test by SPSS13.0. Based upon the analysis of the results, a comparative study of their listening level is done in order to explore their differences in using different listening teaching mode.After the analysis of those data and information, the research results show that:1) There are differences between the grammar-based mode and the PBL mode. Students’listening comprehension ability has been improved greatly; students’ attitudes to listening learning have changed greatly; the cooperation among students and communication with teachers are strengthened than before.2) The differences are mainly manifested in the aspects of changes of listening comprehension, students’ attitude and the interaction between teacher and students.3) The PBL mode has significant impact on students’ listening level, and a considerable improvement can be seen after the experiment, besides, this teaching mode also has great influence on the future learning.The research sheds light on the theoretical and pedagogical aspects of listening teaching. First of all, this study has broadened the range of listening comprehension research to some extent. Secondly, the study is of some value for the application of this teaching method in the process of teaching, then to improve students’ listening comprehension.
