Jeffrey Lau’s Film Study

Jeffrey Lau is a real creative talent in Hong Kong film industry, under the mask of "neurotic cutter", it’s full of passion, absolute sincerity and inborn familiarity feeling of film from him. He starts his director career with ghost film, and makes most of his film stories are filled with personal love idea, then let his beautiful imagination to science-acrobatic film. The skills of many of his films seem like without trace and act from beginning to end with stopping, they actually are an experienced assurance of various materials which reflect the Hong Kong society reality, and an experienced use of lens language, as well as an experienced control of each narrative skill. Jeffrey Lau makes Hong Kong traditional culture, local people on "97complex" and complicated ideology together by a special way of deconstruction. He brings us many classical screen stories, and many penetrating dialogues. Even the work environment is full of commercial atmosphere,he can also keep an honest and romantic attitude, and contributes to HK movie box with his own creation ideas. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Lau reflects the complex scene accurate scheduling, individual characters, tight-knit comedy genius burdens and skillful shooting techniques in his film, these important elements make his personal direct style deeper.This paper will use the intertextuality theory, the type of film theory and personal roles theory, discussed in light of Jeffrey Lau’s director films.
