Poetic Research On Chang-dong Lee’s Film

As an important aspect of culture industry,film is a cultural product which have the most global culture dissemination effect.Right now, governments around the world all increasingly emphasizes the importance of cultural industry development, and industry attribute of the film has won a broad and deep attention of the global filmdom. However, the result of too concerned about development of film industry,is the decline of art ontology research and practical exploration. As two scholars Robert C. Allen and Douglas Gomery emphasized in his book Film History:Theory and Practice, understanding and researching the film must be built on an open cognitive perspective, and systematically understanding the filmdom has an extremely vital significance on research and creative practice. Poetic, as an important principle and effective method of film artistic creation, have been an important aspect of attention with its unique inner being as well as the visual spectacle,and to explore the film poetic character have once been the focal point of the filmdom.But as the increasingly emphasizing on the effect of the film industry,more and more people neglect the research of film poetic.As one of the backbone of the new korean film, Chang-dong Lee who won a reputation as a poet of asking life have done a deep study and exploration on poetic character with his courage, and creativily integrated commercial elements into poetic expressions such as the film typed theory and classical Hollywood narrative structure, in order to obtain the balance of commercial properties and film art character. Throughout his five film works, rich poetic character is not only reflected in the proper control of the poetic expression and realistic style of film images, but also lies in its profound understanding of poetic connotation,that is torture of human nature based on the profound humanistic care of humanity.His film works are all keeping brutal realism, however different from contemporary Jin Jide, Hong Sang-soo etc, his films kernel lies in the deep thinking on different social problems and contradictions in the process of social development, and always trying to show the beauty of human nature under the objective present despair.What’s more, his works are full of profound oriental wisdom, but compared with other directors who always emphasized poetic character expression, his film image system has a distinct blend of modernity and a mix of multi-type elements. Director Lee’s research and practice on the poetic character is based on the thinking of movie ontology characteristics, emphasizing to effectively combined with eastern poetic thinking and western poetic technique of expression, so as to gain the objective thinking of common problem in modern society, and to get mental torture of man and human in this right time.This article will star from the industry context and cultural context of director Lee, through an exploration of social and cultural environment and a study of the trajectory of South Korea’s culture industry development, as well as with an combination of the Lee’s creation course, we will know the main factors which cause director Lee always focus on film poetic character. On the basis of reviewing the poetic character, I should have got the meaning of film poetic character so that I could reason the argument of this paper clearly. On the deep analysis to the director Lee’s five film works, I should find his uniqueness and traditional poetic expression strategy through summing up its poetic expression form. On the basis of summarizing its poetic expression, the authors attempt to explore the poetic thinking of director Lee, obtain his poetic wisdom which is mixed with eastern philosophical and western modern thoughts, and take the film "poem" for an example so as to highlight the important role of his film works which is under the poetic wisdom in the new korean.Film poetics, as one of the most important aspects of the art ontology, have an important role in the film creation and theoretical research. South Korean director Lee obtained wide attention of the international film industry throught the noticeable poetic films, and with only five films director Lee occupies an important position in the map of new korean film,thus we would know obviously that poetic character still has important significance for the current movie creation.This study attempts to examine the poetic character of expression mechanism and strategy of director Lee’s film work under his poetic wisdom, in order to explore how important the poetic in maintaining a balancee between the film industry attributes and its art property.
