The thesis starts from the historical node of Late Ming Dynasty when Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and other various cultural ideologies were intertwined with the Catholic culture later introduced in from the west. He can be as a Catholic, and also had made many scientific contributions as well.The first part is mainly a review of the scientific contribution made by Xu Guangqi; the second part deals with his religious thought. The thesis tries to interpret Xu Guangqi’s religious beliefs by studying his religious writings; the third part presents a more comprehensive Xu Guangqi to the readers. The author believes that there does not exist an impassable gap between religion and science as Xu Guangqi is a perfect embodiment.Based on the analysis of Xu’s academic ideology, the thesis conducts tentative exploration to the development of the relation between religion and science both in historical and modern times. In-depth analysis of his scientific contributions and religious thought, interpretation of the interaction between them under the specific historical condition in late Ming Dynasty, and his three different identities, namely scholar-official, religious believer and learned person, are all taken into consideration so as to study Xu in a relatively comprehensive perspective. The author believes that only in this way can Xu Guangqi be displayed thoroughly. Starts from the specific case study of Xu Guangqi, the thesis draws a general conclusion at last the same time. It not only discusses the relation between religion and science in modern times, but also delivers an optimistic outlook on the future development of this relation heading in the direction of complication and diversification.
