In this paper, a new method which is more efficient to synthesize a novel organic nonlinear material4-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate(DAST) has been introduced.By this method, the temperature and the response time of every step have been regulated, therefore the yield has been raised. In the process of synthesize the stilbazole methiodide. the response time has been shorten, and the continues stir has been replaced by stir at the time when the crystallization has begun. And by this method, we can obtain plenty of pale yellow acerose crystals rather than a small quantity of yellow powders. We wash the product by chloroform before the recrystallization by methanol. The non-polar organic solvent can wash away the grease attached to the crystals, and make the recrystallization easier.The optical properties of organic nonlinear optical(NLO) materials is closely related to the molecular structure. Different structure lead to different optical properties. We have imitated some molecules which have similar structure to DAST by software, and calculated some parameters of them and this will be helpful to the work in the future.
