The antimicrobial agent is one of the widely used additives in industrial areas. Its history can be traced back to ancient Egyptian mummies period and in the modern time, its development began from the1980s. Nowadays, with the continuous improvement of people’s living standard, antibacterial agents have been widely used in every part of our lives.Especially in the application of waterborne coatings, how to build a perfect antimicrobial system and how to do the analysis has become a very hot topic.In the Review part of this report, the development, classification and characteristics of the coatings and waterborne coatings were briefly introduced. And then, the related background knowledge and properties of microorganism were described. Besides, the classifications, properties, and working principles of antimicrobial agents were also mentioned. Five kinds of antimicrobial products (Proxel AQ, Proxel CMC, Proxel BZ Plus, Proxel BC and ZOE-T) were selected as the study objects of this study.25different formulations of anti-bacterial waterborne coatings were picked up as the test samples depending on the features and recommended dosage of these5antimicrobial agents. The research focused on the wet-state preservation test, determination of anti-bacterium., fungicides and algaecides for paints film. By testing the antimicrobial efficacy of the original and accelerated samples,4kinds of long-term effective and stable formulations were suggested. In additon, how to extract and determine the3active ingredents (1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one BIT、5-chloro-2methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one/2methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one CMIT/MITand zinc pyrithione ZPT) in these5antimicrobial agents were also in-dept on research in this report. The three compounds were determined by high performance liquid chromatography using external standard method.For BIT and CMIT/MIT,4different solvents and4different centrifugal extraction time had been tried and a best prepared method had been got. For ZPT,3different ultrasonic time and4different reaction time had been tried and an extraction method was also been obtained.
