As a study of the early and middle Qing Dynasty roral polychrome painting,the purpose of the paper is to explore the design ideas and artistic features, which can be the model and the source of ideas for the present traditional Chinese architectural design.Based on the research of literatures such as polychrome painting in Architectural Design Standards of Qing Dynasty, YangShiFang Archives, and the count painting, combined with the investigation of polychrome painting of Ming&Qing Dynasty in Beijing and the surrounding areas, the paper tries to analyse the polychrome painting entries with the help of interpretation, iconography and documentation methods. All nouns are clarified according to the type, part, decoration, color,and craftwork, and commented from the literal and pictorial methods. This paper attempts to analyze the forming reason of early Qing Dynasty polychrome painting,and the forming prosess of some typical patterns. The paper also discusses the classsification the early Qing Dynasty and make clear the course of Qing Dynasty roral polychrome painting.Qing Dynasty roral polychrome painting is classified into two types,the Palace type(can be divided into Hexi and Xuanzi) and the Su Type, which is created by Liang Sicheng. The basic principle of this scientific clasiification is the painting theme which is also used by the author for the classification of the polychrome painting in early and middle Qing Dynasty. The middle Qing Dynasty is an important transition period. The detail design of Hexi and Xuanzi polychrome painting has set in middle Qing Dynasty,but without change in late period. Su type polychrome paingting prefer lucky designs in early time, but life painting in late time. The previous study paid much more attention to Hexi and Xuanzi than Su type, which is recorded the most in Architectural Design Standards of Qing Dynasty. The study of decoration, color, craft and other aspects of Su type in middle Qing Dynasty can fill the gap of Qing Dynasty roral polychrome paingting, which is also the basis of Yuanming Yuan construction recovery.At the last, this research will be used in the restoration design of Yuanming Yuan polychrome painting in Qianlong period building. The paper tries to use four examples which covering all the basic polychrome paingting types in Yuanming Yuan, from building type, color type, as well as the main data source.
