In recent years, HID lamps have been accepted as a good choice for automotive headlight applications for its high intensity, high efficiency and long life. But they have a very complex6steps startup process. And each of them needs its distinct control strategy. Using traditional analog control will result in a complex circuit. And it’s hard to realize sophisticated control algorithms. In this paper, newest digital control strategy is studied and adopted in the automotive HID ballast control IP design. And a better efficiency is expected comparing to convetional design based on MCUs.This IP’s main task is to read the output value of the ballast, then judge the startup stage of the lamp, finally send the correct control signal to ballast’s switching unit. This IP is SOC architecture, it consists of a main control module, WISHBONE bus and necessary peripherals like PWM, timer, PID controller and ROM, etc.Through out the paper, the whole IP and every module’s functions, architectures, design details and some verification results are demonstrated, algorithms and computer arithmetic knowledge are explained.
