With a written history of2,000years, Yi nationality in Weishan County hasinherited and made great innovations continuously. Through their indigenous work,the designing styles of costumes, which are the carrier of Yi culture, impress peopleout the group deeply with its distinguished characteristics of Yi people. Being one ofthe unique branches of Chinese costumes, Yi costumes of Weichan County are full ofethnic characteristics. It’s patterns are the embodiments of Yi people’s way ofproducing, living, religion, customs and historical cultures. It’s a significant part ofChinese culture.Weishan Yi and Hui Nationalitis Autonomous County was designated by theState Counsel as “National City of History and Culture” in1994, and then“Hometown of Yi Ethnic Costume” in1994. Yi ethnic costumes are selected as thefirst preservation of folk cultures by the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, YunnanProvince. Since then, it has played a significant role in the history with its extensivecultural influences.It’s an ideal method to combine the traditional folk cultures with the moderndesign elements to promote the communication and transmission of echini cultures.With the purpose of draining unique characteristics of the patterns of Yi costumes, thisthesis will investigate and analyze the related cultural backgrounds of Yi costumes ofWeishan County. Findings will be applied into the designing of folk cultures.Combining with modern artistic techniques, unique folk styles and characteristics areof help in stressing the aesthetics and transmission of cultures, which are applicantstrategies in graphic design. Designing applications will be explored through theexpression of ideas, the expression of designing, the channels of which messages aretransmitted.
