Xiang Pu is a series of ancient books which recorded source and characteristics of aroma medicines, the combination of aroma medicine’s prescription, the process of refining herbal medicine, and events of using aroma medicines. This article investigated records of Xiang Pu in bibliographical books, indicating that since Song Dynasty, Xiang Pu has been classified in five categories except medicine by bibliographers. The article also introduced and compared the process of refining herbal medicine and the rules of prescription in TCM and those in Xiang Pu.This paper summarizes the methods and dosage forms of Xiang Pu, and organize recorded on the medical books. Found out aromatic prescriptionins recorded on the medical books since Eastern Jin Dynasty. IN Northern and Southern Dynasties the laws of aromatic prescriptionins have been made. Product methods and classification of aromatic prescriptionins in Song Dynasty is more elaborate than before, indicating a greatly enriched and development of aromatic prescriptionins in Song Dynasty.Through encyclopedias, history books, poetry, and other records of the Song Dynasty, this article classified and summarized the characteristics of each type of aromatic prescriptionins, and clearifid the use of each type. Aromatic prescriptionins of Xiang Pu of Song Dynasty can be divided into five classifications. Yinzhuan Xiang, is all kinds of incense powdered, placed in the the woodcut mold, press a variety of patterns to burn. Yinzhuan Xiang have been used as timer in Song Dynasty. Ninghe Xiang can be classified into many types, as Longxian Xiang, Zhangzhong Xiang, Jia Dunou Xiang, Ya Xiang etc.The biggest different between Yinzhuan Xiang and Ninghe Xiang is dosage forms. Ninghe xiang is made into forms of pill or cookie. Nihua Xiang are using aromatic medicine to simulate incense of flowers, only a few are made of real flowers.It have simulate all kinds of flowers such as plum blossom, wintersweet, orchid, osmanthus etc. Xunyi Xiang takes the most parts of records in the ancient medical books.The paper also summarizes color, storage, adhesives of aromatic productions, and scale of the prescriptions, feature of the using of Eaglewood. Found out that aromatic productions could have red, back, yellow, brown and write color. Those productions use refine honey, storax oil, common bletilla tuber powder as adhesives. Products require storage, seven days, two weeks, a month or more. Storage procedure can make the smell more uniform. It must stored in well sealing porcelain underground in order to avoid daylight. This article also summarizes production methods of each type of aromatic prescriptions. Production methods are generally determined by the prescription formulations. Different types of prescription formulations, their production methods also vary.This article analysis9types of aromatic prescriptiona of Xing Pu, totally108prescriptions, using statistical analysis methods. Eaglewood have the highest using frequency,114times. Others in order are musk,72times, sandalwood,68times, camphol,60times, clove,42times, holy basil,28times, rhizoma nerdostachyos,27times, turbo operculum,25times, Jinyan Xiang,24times, wrinkled giant hyssop,23times, libanotus,19times, common aucklandia root,13times, Natrii Sulfas,13times, nutgrass galingale rhizome,10times, clove bark,10times. The largest medicinal sources are herbs, followed by animal drugs and mineral drugs. In the herbs, timber are used most frequently, most types are roots and rhizomes.Finally, the article summarized functions of aroma medicine’s prescriptions in Xiang Pu, such as adjusting Qi and blood, eliminating dampness and exorcising evil spirits, strengthening the body resistance to pathogenic factors, perfuming body and activating perspiration, and refreshing mind. Examples were given respectively.
