Headache is a symptom, not a disease. In critical conditions few cases have headaches, but frequent headache may cause fatigue to the extreme, which affects normal daily life According to modern medicine there are three categories of headaches, i.e. vascular headache, muscle contraction headache and inflammation headache. However, in traditional Chinese medicine it is usually caused by internal injury from emotional frustration complicated by contraction of external wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, dryness or fire.Differentiation of syndromes according to the theory of the six meridians listed in Shanghan Zabing Lun (Treatise on Cold-induced Diseases) focuses on headache caused by disorders of the Taiyang, Shaoyang, Shaoyin, Taiyin and Jueyin Meridians, based on which headache has been diagnosed and treated by practitioners of the later generations and they made it clear that headache location was different. At present practitioners are using this formula to treat parietal pain, migraine, nerve headache, headache due to cerebral concussion, cluster headache, trigeminal nerve headache, intractable headache and headache in periods. Laboratory tests have proved that the formula can ease pain and calm down nerves, and dilate vessels. That is why it is effective to migraine and parietal headache caused by indulgence in smoking, drinking too much alcohol and coffee as well as stress in daily life that induce vascular contraction.
