Currently, the Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment of insomnia are mostly based on yang excessiveness yin deficient, heat in blood, heart and spleen deficiency, and few on yang deficiency. Through clinical observations, some of the insomnia patients who received either yin nourishing, heat clearing or reinforcing yang have low efficacy. We had observed clinically that by applying’jue yin’diagnosis and using’wumei pills’as the treatment concoction can improve insomnia patients’sleep quality and efficacy significantly. The aim of this clinical observation is to observe the efficacy of’wumei pills’in the treatment of insomnia, and therefore, discuss the Chinese medicine mechanism of using’jue yin’as the diagnostic tool on insomnia patients.2ObjectiveTo observe the clinical efficacy and symptomatic changes, using’jue yin’diagnosis and’wumei pill’concoction, of the insomnia patients.3MethodCollect40cases, which the patients are clinically diagnosed as Insomnia using CCMD-3diagnostic standards, and also fulfill Chinese medicine’jue yin’diagnosis. Each patients are given’wumei pill’concoction for4weeks. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Chinese medicine symptoms chart as clinical evaluation by comparing the scores before and after treatment. All statistical data are analyzed using SPSS17.0.4ResultsAfter4weeks of treatment.37clinical cases are collected. Total sleep time:before treatment:(3.32±0.54)hours, after4weeks of treatment:(4.85±0.73)hours. The data obtained does not follow normal distribution; non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test is used. Total sleep time before and after treatment is statistically significant (P<0.05). PSQI score:before treatment:(16.73±2.16) after4weeks of treatment:(10.95±3.39). The data follow normal distribution and using t-test, before and after treatment there is a statistical significant in the difference in the PSQI score (P<0.05). Chinese medicine symptomatic chart score:before treatment:(26.59±5.44) after4weeks of treatment:(14.40±5.21). Using t-test, the score before and after treatment is statistically significant (P<0.05). According to the symptomatic chart score result:Cured21.62%, significantly effective45.94%, effective:27.02, ineffective:5.4%. Total efficacy:94.6%.5Conclusion1. Jue yin syndrome is found commonly in insomnia patients who are either elderly or experience long term sleep disorder.
