Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was the most influential musician in Germanyin the Baroque period, and was later known as the "Father of Music". His music has laida solid foundation for the emergence and development of the musical culture in Europeand the whole world.Six suites for unaccompanied cello is one of the major works of Bach. His suitesare well structured with deep philosophy and logic, highly rational but approachable. Italso has a wealth of emotion, wisdom and humanist thought, particularly the sixth suitewhich is considered the most difficult one in all suites and it is an essential repertoire ofwell-known cellist.This thesis is to study Bach’s six suites for unaccompanied cello from theperspectives of the characteristics of the creation period, the suite structure, playingstyle, fingering and bowing in the actual playing and version comparisons. The commonand different aspects of the traditional German schools and Russian schools are alsocompared and analyzed. Last but not least, it introduces the emerging forms of play andput forward the author’s own views based on this.
