As the oldest categories of watercolor, watercolor landscape painting keeps developing al along the time, many remarkable achievements are exhibited in front of the public, and of course these achievements are based on the accumulation of transcendence and innovation. So to get useful implications, it is very necessary to study the history of the development of watercolor landscape.In the development of watercolors from the simple coloration along with sketch to a separate color paintings, besides continuous breakthroughs of historic watercolorists and accumulation of history and culture, watercolor landscapes also played a very important role, precisely because of the development of watercolor landscape, the watercolor finally formed and developed.In the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, watercolor experienced a very important change. Watercolor landscape was advanced from childishly to maturely in these periods and finally became a kind of artistic paintings rather than that was just used as topographic maps in the early time. In this article, we focus on this turning period, and study the changes and their causes of the development of watercolor landscape painting. After studying the changes of screen layout, materials, tools, subject and artistic thought, the inheritance and development of watercolor landscape painting as well as the effect of mainstream aesthetic ideology are summarized.Learning the development of watercolor landscapes in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries enables us to get inspired and helps us to find the way of how to develop watercolor landscapes in the future. And this is exactly the main attitude of this article.
