Xu Dishan is a very unique writer in the Chinese modern literary history. He is not only one of the founders of the largest literary study association during the May Fourth Movement, but also a special role in creating new literature. Both his insightful views and artistic styles are unique. Although he doesn’t have many works, most works are innovative. His life has natural connections with religion, which is represented by the complicated and confusing features in his works. Previous researchers focus on religion, but do not give sufficient attention to widely creative views of his works. Even if in matters of religion, evaluations of his work are controversial. In the single framework of religion, it is easy to overlook his creative practice of "heterogeneity" and ultra-era proposition, and to ignore his strength in telling legendary and philosophical stories. In fact, Xu Dishan has powerful influence in literary creation, translation, religion, education, editing and publishing. This paper mainly discusses "heterogeneity", the most distinctive features in the works of Xu Dishan. Theme will be extended on two levels:first, describe the definition of "heterogeneity" and corresponding support evidence, then combine with "heterogeneous space" theory, proposed by Edward Sawyer, to explore how his creation reflects the "heterogeneous" nature; Second, explore how Xu Dishan highlights "heterogeneity" in the process of creation by using his special life experience, personality, religious beliefs, cultural self-cultivation and literary trend at that time. From a macro-historical background, the author interprets the text objectively in order to avoid misunderstandings and controversial evaluations.Based on the objective of research mentioned above, despite the part of Introduction, the paper will be extended to following four parts:The introduction sorts the previous research literatures about Xu Dishan, and explores main factors to influence the variability of research themes along the timeline. Meanwhile controversial issues are thoroughly analyzed and discussed. In specific, By analyzing evaluations of Xu Dishan from several famous masters such as Shen Congwen, Mao Dun and Lao she, this paper investigate why such a large different exists among modern researchers, and represents their complex entanglements. Finally, the author tries to resolve acceptance difference due to misunderstanding, and to avoid more negative subjective feelings of the writer due to effect of simple conceptualization, which resulting in easily overlooking the important contribution of Xu Dishan. The first part mainly explores the presentation of "heterogeneity" in the works of Xu Dishan, and focuses on creative themes about Myanmar, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Southeast Asia as analysis objects, with supplemental materials about "heterogeneity" and Edward Sawyer’s "heterogeneous space" theory. Show the process of changes and formation of his ideology and creation features. The second part compares writing style, which reflects writer’s creative personality. Based on the relationship between Xu Dishan and literary trends at that time, and his special "heterogeneity" and personal values, the author leads to the comparison among different writers in the same era. Under the same choice of exotic features, romantic views, religious beliefs as the theme of creation, Xu Dishan dominates due to his special "heterogeneity", and reveals his distinctive and insightful views about literary trends, literary inner spirit, theme and form, creation ideology. Then the paper combines with the text interpretations to discover rift, furthermore, explains the difference between his conceptualization and creation. The third part mainly analyzes the specific text. Based on bizarre plot, variable ordered structure, and a number of creative methods, the author analyze unique artistic charm and style in the works of Xu Dishan. There is a creative practice to constitute the "detached and indifferent" thinking, which is best to highlight the uniqueness of his own creation, such as the impact of different religious and cultural on him represented in his creation. The Epilogue discusses the most prominent "heterogeneity" in his works, which is related to the important theory of heterogeneous space (ie. third space). Meanwhile the author breaks the limitations of conceptual framework and single perspective by using this theory.
