Shen Baozhen Diplomatic Thoughts And Practice Theory

ShenBaoZhen was a minister in late Qing dynasty, a successful people in Chinese modernhistory and he had a crucial affection in late Qing dynasty. He was not the soul of diplomacy incharacter at that time and his methods about diplomacy could not come into being a wholediplomatic system, yet his diplomatic thoughts and activities played an important part in lateQing dynasty. This paper is mainly talking about the origin of his diplomatic thoughts, thecontent of his diplomatic thoughts, and my commentary about his thoughts and activities.First of all, on ShenBaozhen’s diplomatic thought forms the origin. From the familyeducation, e influence of traditional concept of patriotism in two aspects.Secondly, this paper expounds the main content of ShenBaoZhen’s diplomatic thoughts andactivities at three parts. The first part mainly express “the right to self-operation”, safeguardingnational sovereignty and national interests. This part mainly takes struggling maintenance shipsovereignty with British and French, negotiating with Japan to defend Taiwan as example. Thesecond part takes handling the crash about religion to protect civil rights, seeing through Spain’sblackmail to safeguard sovereignty as example, in order to point out his sprit "no compromise".The third part, he pointed out china should swell national strength to provide strong diplomaticbacking as soon as possible.The thought can be recorded several point as follow: fetching inadvanced technology abroad, engaging foreigners, developing the modern military, establishingwestern school, sending Chinese students to abroad aim to cultivate talents with Chinese navy,developing Taiwan, strengthening interior affairs and defending aggression.Thirdly, it is my commentary about his thoughts and activities. First of all, this paper holdsa positive estimate about his diplomatic activities at three points as follow: safeguarding China’ssovereignty and national interests, promoting China’s diplomatic process of modernization,expanding the diplomatic experience of the Qing dynasty.Thereafter, this paper points out someshortcomings of his diplomatic thoughts and activities.
